One topic that comes up frequently in conversation with mental health providers is how and where to locate affordable and effective continuing education units needed to keep our licenses and certifications current.
We'll keep you informed of any events and trainings that we learn about. And we invite you to share items of interest to providers. Please email Rebecca Caldwell (rcaldwell.storykeeper@gmail.com) with details, suggestions, or questions.
Here are two CEU sources that you may be interested in:
October 8, 2011: In recognition of Mental Illness Awareness Week, NAMI Four Seasons hosts a day-long training at Blue Ridge Community College on the criminalization of mental illness, featuring Pete Earley, author of Crazy: A Father’s Search Through America’s Mental Health Madness, as the keynote speaker.
The event is designed to bring together a cross section of law enforcement officers, judicial representatives, mental health providers, elected officials, families and community members who are affected by mental illness. Crazy describes Earley’s attempts to help his son, Mike, who is arrested after being denied treatment during a psychotic break. Earley contends that jails and prisons have become our new asylums and discusses what can be done to decriminalize mental health. (.25 CEUs for providers/$20.) Pre-registration is required.
