A treasured tradition in our community is the annual walk to raise money to work toward the eradication of hunger and poverty around the globe. C-R-O-P means Communities Responding to Overcome Poverty. It is a global effort with a reach that extends to most nations in the world that are experiencing grinding poverty or cataclysmic natural disasters.
“What a huge mission!”
“Can it be successful?”
“Is there any way?”
Understandable statements; fair questions. Do the answers really matter?
Church World Service was founded in 1946 and funds raised in the CROP Walk go to projects in all parts of the world. 25% of the money raised in the Asheville-Buncombe walk will stay here in our community and be shared equally among Loving Food Resources, ABCCM, Meals on Wheels, and MANNA. The balance will be used abroad in projects which will be described in more detail in future Connections.
So please, stay tuned and watch for these informative pieces.
In the meantime, consider the admonition from John:
“. . . let us love not in word or speech, but in truth and action.” (1 John 3:18)
We are in need of volunteers to help plan for this walk coming up in six months. Our effort last year did meet a very mild goal, but I hope that we can reach out more energetically in a manner befitting our All Souls identity statement. Will you help?
