In each Connection through October, look for information about Church World Service and one of its fundraisers, CROP Walk. Our local walk will be held October 16.
Would you imagine for a moment that your wonderful Asheville water was unavailable, and that you had to walk to a common water pump to get water for cooking, drinking, and washing. From my house, I might think of walking down into Biltmore Village… Let’s say that the depot was the site of a working pump and only about a mile for me. Actually, most people in poor, third world countries might have to walk two, three, or even up to eight times that distance.
When I arrive, there is a line and it takes me almost an hour to have the chance to pump my water. I fill two gallon jugs and hook my fingers through the handles and begin the long walk back up the hill to my house. This hot weather we have been having lately makes the walk a tough one. And my advancing age and aching back begin to slow my steps even more.
Millions of people do not have access to clean water and depend on limited sources at long distances from their homes. YOU CAN HELP. How? By walking in October’s CROP Walk and helping to provide funds to finance the digging of wells in villages where that precious resource in so limited.
