Bev Gaines retires after 20 years’ service

At the 11:15 service on Pentecost Sunday (June 12), Bev Gaines, retiring Education for Ministry Mentor (EfM), was honored for her twenty years of service as Mentor of the All Souls Education for Ministry seminar group. Scores of people from All Souls and elsewhere have benefitted from her mentoring.

Also honored was this year’s graduating class: Don Miller, Chuck Varner, Marc Asaad, and Lewis Sorrels. As a result of their four year experience, all have been equipped for their respective ministries. Varner is a faithful volunteer in the Parish office; he often serves as the initial contact that many have with All Souls. Don is active in the Diocesan Cursillo community and is also in the discernment program as preparation as a potential candidate for ordination to the Diaconate. Marc is involved with All Souls youth program and is very active in Boy Scouting. Lewis has served as a warden and member of the Vestry. He is also a member of the Altar Guild and serves as a Lay Eucharistic Minister.

Also honored was Rev. Charles Winter. Fr. Charles and his late wife, Flower, were instrumental in establishing the Education for Ministry program at Sewanee and writing the original curriculum for Education for Ministry.

Education for Ministry is a distance learning program of the School of Theology at the University of the South at Sewanee, Tennessee. It is a four year program for lay people that includes studying the Old and the New Testaments, church history, and philosophy and theology.  Spiritual growth is enhanced through a process of theological reflection.
