The Care of Creation Committee hosted its second movie night (in a series of three) on May 6th. The group watched the film Dirty Business, which explores the coal industry and reveals the social and environmental impact of coal power. In our after-film discussion, we shared our surprises: that there really isn’t such a thing as “clean coal,” that much damage is done to the environment for a small amount of coal and that the political/economic systems are deeply interwoven around this issue.
We found hope in the effort to get the word out, in our sense of blessing to live in a region aware of being good creation stewards, and in a community-wide encouragement to be mindful of our environmental impact. We all learned from each other and found there are many things we can do to care for creation, making every day Earth Day at All Souls.
On Friday, June 3rd we will watch Renewal, a collection of stories from people of different faiths working to confront the challenges of environmental degradation. From evangelical Christians bearing witness to mountaintop removal to Muslims forging bonds between urban communities and sustainable farms, this documentary shows how the religious environmental movement is growing. Please see the website for more information: www.renewalproject.net/film.
Please join us at 6 p.m. in the Warner Building conference room. Snacks and refreshments will be served and the film will be followed by a discussion. We hope that everyone can make it. For more information contact Dorrie Sieburg at dorriesieburg@gmail.com or Vicki Hesse at vickihesse@yahoo.com
Our next Care of Creation meeting will be on Sunday, June 12th at 10:10 in the Christian Education room. We encourage anyone who has an interest to please join us for this meeting.
