We are honored and delighted that Asheville native Lauren Winner will be our next distinguished presenter in the Zabriskie Learning Series, co-sponsored by the Cathedral of All Souls and the Center for Spiritual Resources. The Zabriskie Learning Series is an annual event designed to share with our community thinkers, speakers, writers, and teachers who are at the forefront, shaping minds and hearts around ideas that deeply matter to us: as individuals, as a community, and as a global communion.
According to Lauren, “‘Home’ has to be one of the most emotionally laden words in the English language. It conjures pictures that have a certain Victorian aura—sweet pictures, cookies baking, intact families, not to mention the material culture of middle-class life. For Christians, the word raises all sorts of questions: ‘Where is our true home? How and where is a Christian to feel at home? How do we navigate the tensions of a Scriptural narrative that call us both to be placed, and to wander?’ These are some of the questions I hope to explore in my lecture—though, because I am a memoirist by trade, I don’t do very well with abstractions. I can really only do what Flannery O’Connor called illuminating the general by way of the particular—that is, to try to shed some light on these large questions by exploring some of the places I have tried to call home.”
The morning lecture will be followed by a time for Q/A, lunch, then an afternoon writing activity, with time for both small-group discussion and whole-group reflection and discussion.

Biography
Lauren F. Winner is the author of numerous books, including Girl Meets God, Mudhouse Sabbath, and most recently a historical study of Anglicanism in early Virginia called A Cheerful and Comfortable Faith. She has appeared on PBS’s Religion & Ethics Newsweekly and has written for The New York Times Book Review, The Washington Post Book World, Publishers Weekly, Books and Culture, and Christianity Today. Winner has degrees from Duke, Columbia, and Cambridge universities, and holds a Ph.D. in history. The former book editor for Beliefnet, Lauren teaches at Duke Divinity School, and lives in Durham, North Carolina. Lauren travels extensively to lecture and teach, and during the academic year of 2010-2011, she will be a visiting fellow at Yale University. When she’s home, you can usually find her curled up, on her couch or screen porch, with a good novel.
